• Dear Liberty Community:

The nomination period is now open for new highly capable program enrollments.  The Washington Legislature mandates that schools provide a highly capable program for students who qualify, regardless of district size.

Parents, students, teachers, and community members may nominate individual students to be considered for the program. Please keep in mind highly capable students are not just those students with high grades or who turn their assignments and projects in on time. In fact, there is no typical highly capable student. On the reverse of this letter is an additional document that answers the frequently asked questions about highly capable programs and includes characteristics of gifted students.

Nomination forms by grade level may be obtained via the Liberty website www.libertysd.us/HiCap or by request through my office. I will be happy to mail or email you a copy of the nomination form once you determine your child has many of the characteristics found in gifted children. Nominations are due by September 11, 2020, and may be mailed to the school at the address below or emailed directly to me.

The student services team will screen all nominees and may make recommendations for further testing. Data used to identify students will include classroom, school, and state assessments, report card grades, teacher recommendations, and finally a standardized ability test called the CogAT 7. Parents will be notified prior to administration of the CogAT 7 should your child be considered for ability testing.

Liberty’s program currently consists of students accessing the HiCap class one day per week with advisor
Mrs. Buys providing additional enrichment or mentoring.  Our students may also pursue other opportunities for advancement in the district, including HS Advanced Placement classes, College in the High School, advanced math, academic competitions, Math is Cool, Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl, FFA and FBLA competitions, and other enrichment options.

If you have any further questions regarding the highly capable program, please contact Margo Smith at msmith@libertysd.us.
