Highly Capable Program

What is a Highly Capable Student?

  • Highly capable students perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced levels when compared with others of their age, experiences or environments. Outstanding abilities are seen within students' general intellectual aptitudes, specific academic abilities, and/or creative productivities within a specific domain.

What is Liberty's Highly Capable Program?

  • Liberty's program involves pull-out services about once a week with the Hi-Cap teacher. Students are grouped by general age ranges and learn a variety of different topics/subjects to:
  1. Expand academic attainments and intellectual skills
  2. Stimulate intellectual curiosity, independence, and responsibility
  3. Develop a positive attitude toward self and others
  4. Develop originality and creativity.

  • Highly capable students are students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments.
  • Outstanding abilities are seen within students' general intellectual aptitudes, specific academic abilities, and/or creative productivities within a specific domain.
  • Any parent/guardian may refer his/her child for highly capable assessment.
  • Parents should complete the Parent Referral Form which includes Authorization for Testing available on this website and in schools.
  • Teachers or other adults may nominate a student.
  • Once services are started, a continuum of services is provided to identified students in grades K-12

When should I nominate my student?

  • Nomination windows are yet to be announced for the 2024-2025 school year

What does testing looking like?

  • The student services team will screen all nominees and may make recommendations for further testing. Data used to identify students will include classroom, school, and state assessments, report card grades, teacher recommendations, and finally a standardized ability test called the CogAT 7. Parents will be notified prior to administration of the CogAT 7 should your child be considered for ability testing.
